Ruth Hodge

This endowed scholarship was established by Ruth Hodge, who graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers College (now Shippensburg University) in 1939 with a degree in elementary education. She wanted to give back to her alma mater and also honor Dr. Albert Lindsay Rowland, who was president of Shippensburg State Teachers College from 1932 to 1945. She felt that President Rowland was "ahead of his time" and he "gave physically challenged students an opportunity to receive an education when many did not." For most of her life, Ruth was inspired by President Rowland's gesture of providing one of her fellow Shippensburg classmates, who had lost an arm, with a chance at a high-quality education.
