Mr. Alfred H. Speers, Jr.
This scholarship was established by Mr. Alfred H. Speers Jr., a loyal friend and supporter of Shippensburg University and the parent of a Shippensburg University graduate. Alfred wanted to honor his favorite high school teacher, Shippensburg University graduate Dr. John R. Smeltz '39, who taught chemistry and physics at New Cumberland High School. He felt that Dr. Smeltz always treated the students like adults, with great respect. Mr. Speers enjoyed additional times with Dr. Smeltz visiting the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and the Cornwall Iron Mine in Lebanon County.
