Estate of Elizabeth Penn Custer
Ms. Custer graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1937, and twice from the University of Pennsylvania (Class of 1940 and 1942M). Following her last graduation, she became an instructor of English and Psychology at Penn Hall in Chambersburg, PA, until 1963. Ms. Custer then became an instructor in the English Department of Shippensburg University, where she remained until her retirement in 1992. Her popularity as a faculty member was evidenced by the devotion of many of her students to this day. Her courses were frequently oversubscribed, particularly those teaching film as literature. As a teacher, she loved to expose her students to foreign cultures through film, and she included many foreign films in the courses she taught. She never distinguished friends from students, and kept in close contact with many former students throughout her life.
