Nancy Hykes Stankus

Vincent G. and Nancy Hykes Stankus met at Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1956 while they were business education majors. Vince came to Shippensburg following four years in the U.S. Navy. Vince began his career at Northeastern York High School. In 1979, Vince passed away due to an auto accident. At the time of his death, he was chair of the Business Education Department at William Penn High School in York City School District where he also supervised vocational programs and coached the golf team. His students spoke of his breadth of knowledge, enthusiasm for his work, expectations for high standards and a caring attitude for all students. His classroom was a "model business" and the focus was on entry-level careers.
Nancy began her career at William Penn and subsequently taught at Northeastern York and Central York School Districts. In addition to business education, she taught English and elementary grades. Following completion of a doctorate at Penn State, Nancy was hired as assistant superintendent at Spring Grove School District where she also served a nine month period as interim superintendent.
In 1986, Nancy joined the faculty of Shippensburg University where she ended her career twenty years later as long-term chair of the Department of Education Leadership and Policy. Students credited her with "successfully navigating the road less traveled and being willing to share the journey with students." One student said "the leadership I practice as principal today is learned from your example."
