Vera Bej

Dr. Emil Bej was born on April 26, 1925, in Stryj, Ukraine. He completed his high school education in Ukraine, his university degree in post-war Western Europe, and post-graduate studies in the U.S. Like many others, Emil and his family suffered greatly during the war years. In 1949, Emil emigrated to Detroit, Michigan, with his family. While completing his post-graduate studies, he held a series of banking positions and taught economics at the high school level.
The Bej family settled in Shippensburg, PA, in 1969. Dr. Bej was a professor of Economic Studies at Shippensburg University for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1998. He also held visiting professorships at the University of Manitoba and Wilson College and Dickinson College in south-central Pennsylvania.
Emil’s family activities, the study of economics, and teaching were his passions. He contributed to his profession through numerous publications in American and foreign scholarly journals and other periodicals.
Vera also has been a long-time educator working for the Cumberland Valley School District. Vera was the 1988 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Following her retirement from that school district, Vera was invited to serve as a Distinguished Educator for the PA Department of Education. She worked as a team member among educational consultants for several school districts including the Lancaster City School District and Chambersburg School District.
