The man, the myth, the legend, Scotte Smith ‘95 cheered on everyone for the last time on July 3, 2018, in Lincoln, Nebraska. His parents, Coach Dave and Marla Smith, created this scholarship to leave a lasting legacy of their son.
Scotte earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education at Shippensburg University. He went on to earn a Master's Degree in Kinesiology from Indiana University in 1997.
Scotte served as a student coach for the SU women's basketball program under his father. He had passion and work ethic for coaching. He looked up to coaches like Pat Summit and Greg Popovich, but the first coach Scotte loved was his dad. Scotte coached girls' and women's basketball for 18 years while serving athletic departments in other ways. He began his career as the girls' head basketball coach at Northview High School in Brazil, Indiana, which was followed by a stint at Holy Cross High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He went on to be an assistant women's basketball coach at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, Merrimack College in Andover, Massachusetts, Stonehill College in Stonehill, Massachusetts, and West Virginia State University in Charleston, West Virginia. He finished his coaching career as Head Women's Basketball Coach at Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska.
