Susan Rimby

As a Professor of History and Philosophy at Shippensburg University,  Dr. Susan Rimby saw a need. She recognized that Chambersburg schools were growing in cultural diversity, and many students needed extra help that was not available to them. She also recognized that Shippensburg University pre-service teachers needed experience with diverse populations and that Shippensburg University was uniquely positioned both geographically and programmatically to provide assistance by offering free tutoring services. Thus, the Trojan/Raider Partnership was founded.
In January of 2010, building on the University's mission of strengthening the country and region, secondary and elementary pre-student teaching students from Shippensburg University began traveling to Chambersburg schools once a week to tutor students in areas ranging from English to science and math. In return, Shippensburg students expanded their classroom knowledge through their work with the Chambersburg students.
Susan hopes to see the partnership grow with additional Shippensburg University tutors visiting more schools in the area. Additionally, she hopes to see Chambersburg students who have participated in the Trojan/Raider Partnership apply to and attend Shippensburg University.  "We started small and would like to expand on what I think is a great idea." To make this possible, Susan established the Trojan/Raider Partnership Academic Scholarship, a fund that will help finance and encourage English-language learning students from Chambersburg area schools to continue their education.
