Roberta Kissinger
Dr. Henry Wilkens came to Shippensburg State College in 1965 as the Director of Public Relations. In 1971, he joined the Shippensburg faculty, teaching management and marketing. Dr. Wilkens was very involved with his students and served as an advisor for Alph Phi Omega and numerous other student organizations. He took a genuine interest in each of his students, serving not only as a mentor, but sharing his love of communications with them.
Marion Wilkens was also a "Shippensburg" institution. She was a member of the Faculty Wives Club, the Junior Civic Club, and Girl Scouting. While always putting her family first, she also worked part-time in the James Burd School.
Henry and Marion Wilkens shared a love for young people and opened their hearts and home to hundreds of children. Many students have past through the Wilkens house affectionately calling Dr. and Mrs. Wilkens "Doc" and "Mom."
In 1995, Dr. Wilkens passed away and many family and friends joined to establish a scholarship in his memory. It was Mrs. Wilkens' desire to endow the scholarship and to meet the first recipient. She, however, passed away in 2003 before the scholarship was able to be awarded. It was their daughter, Roberta, and their son, Ted, who along with family and friends endowed the scholarship, which will provide a perpetual legacy memorializing Dr. Henry and Mrs. Marion Wilkens.
