John Clinton provided the leadership and vision for the SU Foundation from 1983 until his retirement in 2018. Under his management, the organization's assets grew from $1 million to more than $77 million. During this time, the SU Foundation had undertaken six successful comprehensive campaigns. The last campaign, Charting the Course, Lighting the Way - the Campaign for Shippensburg University, is the largest campaign ever in Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education history, raising over $65 million dollars in charitable dollar commitments.
During his tenure at the Foundation, John was active in the local community with various organizations including the Shippensburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the Capital Area Economic Development Authority Board of Directors, and the Franklin and Adams Counties Easter Seals Society Board of Directors.
For 10 years, Mr. Clinton also served on CASE's National Committee for Institutionally Related Foundations and most recently completed a two-year term as chairperson of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Chief Advancement Officers and Foundation Chief Executives.
Entrepreneurial projects outside of the Foundation's traditional fundraising program have included the planning, construction, and management of student housing, land acquisition, and the management of the Bartos Child and Family Center on the University campus.
In 2013, the SU Foundation partnered with the Shaner Group to form Raider Capital Ventures, LLC, to construct and operate a Courtyard by Marriott, 110-room, select service hotel adjacent to the Conference Center at Shippensburg University, which opened in 2015. This scholarship has been established by the Shaner Group in recognition of John’s contribution to the SU Foundation and Shippensburg University, the township of Shippensburg, and the surrounding community.
