Carrie Bean
Carrie Bean of Hagerstown, Maryland received her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Shippensburg University in 2004 and her master’s degree in cyber security from University of Maryland University College in 2014. During her time at Shippensburg, Carrie was a member, Secretary, and President of the Programming team as well as a founding member of Women in Computer Science, participated in Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) club, and as a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon. Carrie was a member of the 2003-2004 Shippensburg University Programming team that qualified for the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals. She continues her involvement with Shippensburg as a member of the Industry Advisory Council for the Milton and Doreen Morgan School of Engineering. Carrie’s experience in Computer Science and Software Engineering enabled her to find a job in the federal government while attending Shippensburg. She has continued to serve as a federal employee using her experience in network design, testing, and modeling gained from her time at Shippensburg.
Jason L. Brookens
Jason L. Brookens, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, graduated from Shippensburg University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in music. During his time at Shippensburg, he participated in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) club and the Shippensburg University Concert Band. An internship in 2003 with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) led to immediate employment as a federal contractor following graduation. Jason continues his support of Shippensburg University as a member of the Industry Advisory Council for the Milton and Doreen Morgan School of Engineering.
Jason continued refining the skills learned in the computer science program to advance his career which has spanned many companies, projects, and positions in the federal contracting space. Most recently Jason is employed as a Senior Database Software Engineer with the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, combining his software engineering skills and his hobby of amateur astronomy into a rewarding yet challenging career. He also enjoys playing music, traveling, and jiu jitsu.
William “Bill” Olsen
William (Bill) Olsen of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in software engineering in 2005 from Shippensburg University. During his time at Ship, Bill achieved honors including graduating cum laude, making the dean’s list for seven of eight semesters, and was a founding member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the Computer Science National Honors Society. He was inducted into Who’s Who for American College Students in 2005. Bill was also involved in a variety of groups and activities including as a director and DJ for WSYC Shippensburg Campus Radio Station and a founding member of Kappa Lambda of Kappa Sigma Fraternity to name a few. Bill subsequently graduated with a Master of Science in Computer Science from Penn State University in 2014. He continues to engage with Shippensburg University as a member of the Industry Advisory Council for the Milton and Doreen Morgan School of Engineering.
Bill’s experience in software engineering and information technology has spanned a variety of positions in both the public and private sectors related to healthcare, tax, and financial services and currently holds the position of Senior Vice President of Application Development at CampusDoor, a fintech local to the Harrisburg area. The experience and education that Bill received from Ship had a profound impact throughout his career and was foundational to his later achievements. Dr. Carol Wellington is a major part of that profound impact.
John C. Yackovich, Jr.
John C. Yackovich, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a 2008 summa cum laude graduate of Shippensburg University, receiving a B.S. in Computer Science with a concentration in software engineering, and a minor in mathematics. John was awarded the PA Board of Governors and SU Foundation Scholarships. While at Ship, John was a member of Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers, SU Theatre, Act V Productions, and the Upsilon Pi Epsilon (President) and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. John’s extracurricular projects at Ship include the Women in Computer Science Website and a pioneering GPS-enabled Mobile Campus Tour project sponsored by the PA Board of Governors.
John earned his M.S in Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as a Teaching and Research Assistant, having multiple peer-reviewed research publications. During his time at Pitt, John completed internships at Argonne National Laboratory and Robert Bosch LLC. Upon graduating, John spent three years at Compunetix, Inc working on industry-leading teleconferencing systems, then joined Google in 2014. John spent nine years with Google Shopping, two of them as a technical lead.
Today, John remains in his hometown of Pittsburgh as a Senior Software Engineer with Google Cloud. John also serves his alma mater as a member of the Industry Advisory Council for the Milton and Doreen Morgan School of Engineering, and as a member of the Annual Fund Leadership Team. John serves his local community with Bike Pittsburgh, the Lawrenceville Tree Tenders, Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and others. John enjoys bicycling, curling, cooking, cocktail making, jazz music, and crossword puzzles. In 2023, John was presented with Shippensburg University’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
