John and Kathleen Magaro
Dr. Magaro was a professor in Shippensburg University’s Communication and Journalism Department from 1968 to 2000. Dr. Magaro not only devoted himself to teaching and mentoring students but also recognized the importance of student advisement. He developed principles and guidelines for the department that enabled students to complete their graduation requirements in a timely manner. As chief operator and advisor to the campus radio station (WSYC), he recognized and expanded opportunities for students to experience more “on airtime” and to develop expertise in multiple aspects of running a radio station.
As a lifelong learner, Dr. Magaro expanded and enhanced his knowledge base through professional conferences and workshops. He held multiple positions in professional and state organizations, including chairing advisory committees with the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
From the time he came to Shippensburg until he left, Dr. Magaro was involved in community activities as a member of the Lions Club, board member of the Shippensburg Public Library and committee person of the Boy Scouts. He frequently assisted with fundraising activities and supported multiple agencies with volunteer work and donations.
Dr. Magaro was an avid supporter of the Shippensburg University Foundation. He volunteered and participated in the campus campaign, the phonathon, and the thankathon.
Mrs. Kathleen Magaro was a registered nurse, obtaining her nursing education at Allegheny General Hospital. She continued her education at Shippensburg University earning a bachelor’s degree in social work and a master’s degree in public administration. During her 45-year professional career she worked in multiple settings, including acute care hospitals, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and concluding her career with the Service Employees International Union as a nurse educator and advocate.
